Claude Garamond

A
lthough there seems to be some debate as to exactly what year Claude Garamond was born, Garamond was born in the late 1400’s (between 1480 & 1490). He started his career out as an apprentice for the Parisian punch cutter, Antoine Augereau at the early age of approximately 20. Working in a print shop, Garamond specialized in type design, punch cutting, and type-founding. After some time, Garamond was commissioned by the King of France, King Frances I, to create a custom Greek typeface which he later called Grecs du Roi. This typeface was created in three original type sets and are preserved at the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris France.
